Design: The Art of Balance Designing backpacks is a constant balancing act between functionality, weight, durability, and the real-world needs of users. Where should a pocket go? What should we add—and what should we leave out? How do we make the pack lighter without compromising its toughness?

In this process, we draw from multiple sources: customer feedback, suggestions from trusted experts, and our own experience—over 30 years of carrying backpacks (not counting schoolbags), 15 years of sewing gear for ourselves, and 7 years of building the HRDY.pl brand.

Marketing tells you to “listen to your customer.” We prefer a different approach: “Share your knowledge so the customer knows what they really need—and whether it's even possible.” Back in 2017, we attended the IWA fair in Nuremberg. At the Mystery Ranch booth, we met the brand’s founder—standing out among well-dressed sales reps in a plaid shirt and jeans. I recognized him from ads and YouTube videos. We were a bit nervous—just three guys with two sewing machines, a roll of Cordura, and two backpack prototypes—about to speak with a legend. But the conversation flowed. He invited us to sit down—not at a negotiation table, just casually—and started talking. Soon, the discussion turned to design. He shared how the RATS medical pack came to be. He brought in top U.S. military medics—PJs, SALS, MARSOC. Each had different expectations: loops here, scissors there, this kind of opening, or that. Total chaos. Eventually, he said “Stop.” He narrowed the team to just two MARSOC medics and started over from scratch.

The result? RATS became the official medical pack standard of the U.S. Army.

The takeaway? Sometimes less is more. And sometimes, it's just better.

For us, that meeting was meaningful. He knew we were going through what he had gone through two decades earlier. He wasn’t trying to warn us—just to ease our path. We showed him one of our first models—the HRDY AS Mk1. He liked it. Complimented the unconventional opening system and the design. Was it just being polite? Maybe. But that conversation continues to motivate us to this day.

Features and Functionality:

A side-access zip pocket on one side, perfect for stowing a jacket, water bottle, or even a hydration system. A top lid pocket ideal for essentials like a multitool, keys, or wallet. Inside, all inner walls are lined with loop-velcro panels (“soft side”) allowing full modular customization using hook-velcro pouches, organizers, and inserts. There’s also an internal zippered mesh pocket for added organization.

The lid features a MOLLE webbing system, and there are attachment loops on the compression straps—ideal for expanding your pack’s capacity with external pouches or gear. Smart, Modular, and Tactical The

UFO32 Mk.2 offers an optional internal pocket designed to hold a rain cover to protect your gear from the elements. But that’s not all—this pocket can be flipped inside-out to transform into a discreet compartment for carrying a long gun, up to 80 cm in length (e.g. an M4 with a 10.5-inch barrel or rifles with folding stocks). Need a longer concealed carry pocket? Let us know by phone or email—we’ll make it happen.
